Niger State Governor, Umar Bago has advocated a return to Agriculture to address insecurity and ensure sustainable development in northern Nigeria.

Bago said this in a statement via Bologi Ibrahim, his chief press secretary, on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that before the discovery of oil in Nigeria, the northern region was globally recognised as a giant in agriculture, saying there was a need to change the narrative by reverting to the old days.

According to him, this would help reduce the dependence on the federal government’s monthly allocations.

Bago said the Niger State government plans to use all available spaces used for banditry activities for farming.

He suggested the use of technology and mechanisation to be in tune with the modernisation of agriculture, adding that the government must create an enabling environment for agriculture to thrive.

Bago further said the north needed to sit down and chart a new course on what measures to take to improve the sector.
