The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that Godwin Emefiele is not available to appear before the House of Representatives because of his health.
Emefiele's absence despite being summoned by lawmakers to brief them on the withdrawal limit policy has caused a ruckus in the House.
Providing an update in a letter on Wednesday, the apex bank revealed that the CBN governor would be represented by the deputy governor, Aisha Ahmad.
According to the letter, Emefiele is out of the country on official engagement and he is also attending to health challenges.
“Regrettably, the governor is out of the country on an official engagement, as well as attending to some health challenges.
"He is, therefore, unavailable to attend the briefing.
"Given the urgency associated with the briefing, a committee of governors led by Aisha Ahmad, deputy governor of financial system stability, is prepared to brief the House", the statement reads.
Reacting to the letter, a member of the House, Segun Odebunmi, expressed disapproval over the appearance of Ahmad as Emefiele's representative.
Odebunmi said that Ahmad should address a committee instead.
Conversely, Deputy Speaker Idris Wase stated that Ahmad should be allowed to brief the lawmakers.
