Yobe: Buni commiserates FUGA over death of student in fire disaster

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has commiserated with the Federal University Gashua (FUGA) community over the death of a student in a fire disaster that razed its female hostel on Saturday.

The governor described the incident as most unfortunate, sad and great loss to the university and its students.

As contained in a statement on Sunday by Mamman Mohammed, the governor's spokesperson, Buni condoled the family and university community over the death of student.

The deceased was identified as Shamsiya who was a 300-level student of the Geography Department and hailed from Edo State.

The governor said: "It is very sad we lost this young and promising lady, we pray to Allah to forgive her shortcomings and grant the family and the university the fortitude to bear the loss"

He further urged the university and all other institutions in the state to take proactive measures against possible fire outbreaks.

He added that: "It is becoming one fire too many, because not too long, there was a fire disaster at the State University and now at the Federal University Gashua, there is the need to take serious measures against future occurances."

The governor has equally directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide relief materials to the affected students for their immediate use.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the SEMA, Mohammed Goje said a team from the agency has made assessment of casualties and items destroyed.

He said: "Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) team in Bade and Jakusko LGA who visited the scene and made a spot assessment of casualities and destroyed items of students confirm sadly the death of 1 female student burned to ashes, 29 room completely destroyed, 301 students affected, 3 injured receiving treatments."
