The Governor of Bauchi, Bala Mohammed, has said that 150 people have lost their lives in Azare, in the Katagum Local Government Area in the state, over the past one month.
There had been a claim by a former member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Baba, that Azare was experiencing a severe COVID-19 outbreak.
The former lawmaker had explained, in a letter to President Buhari, that 100 lives had been lost within a week in Azare.
However, Bala Mohamed said that the deaths in the region were not due to coronavirus, and but hypertension.

Bala said, during a press media, “We have reviewed the rumour about Azare that it has become a morgue. It’s not true. We have gotten the statistics of the deaths in the last 30 days. About 150 died in Azare, an average of about 8 deaths per day and most of them we have found the cause to arise from hypertension and other related diseases.
“It’s not true that people are falling and dying in Azare. Even if that is the situation, we are moving there as a government.”
In an effort of the state government to stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the governor ordered a total lockdown on Giade, Katagum, and Zaki Local Government Areas in Bauchi state.
The lockdown will begin from 1w May, running a 10-day course.
