Biafra Activist, Nnamdi Kanu Reiterates Why ESN Was Formed

Biafra Activist, Nnamdi Kanu Reiterates Why ESN Was Formed

Biafra political activist, Nnamdi Kanu has restated that the inclination to defend the Eastern region prompted the creation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Kanu had earlier alleged that Fulani supremacists were planning attacks on the two geopolitical regions in Nigeria.

Consequently, the diaspora-based separatist leader called on southeast and South-South state governors and their lawmakers to collaborate with his group, the controversial Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to keep their communities safe.

Further reacting via his known Twitter handle on Wednesday, the 53-year-old insisted that the "political class failed to act", hence IPOB's decision to establish ESN.

"To us, the defence of the Eastern Region against marauding Fulani terrorists in the guise of herdsmen is of paramount importance," Kanu wrote.

"When the governors and political class failed to act, despite our prompting, we decided to defend our land."

Who is Nnamdi Kanu?

Nnamdi Kanu was a relatively obscure figure until 2009 when he started Radio Biafra, a station that called for an independent state for the Igbo people and is broadcast to Nigeria from London.

Though he grew up in Nigeria's south-east and went to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Kanu moved to the UK before graduating.

Kanu is the latest in a line of ethnic Igbo activists taking up the cause of pushing for an independent state, saying the Igbos have been marginalised by successive Nigerian governments.

Ejimakor speaks on Igbo Presidency

In a piece of related news, IPOB’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor has expressed his skepticism about whether Igbo Presidency is the solution to Nigeria's woes.

Ejimakor shared his thoughts via his known Twitter handle on Tuesday.

"This truth is self-evident: For #IPOB and @MaziNnamdiKanu, the real issue is NOT #IgboPresidency," the legal practitioner wrote.

"The REAL ISSUE is whether Igbo Presidency is the solution to the PROBLEM known as #Nigeria."

IPOB (now proscribed) is a Biafran separatist organization in Nigeria.

Its main aim is to restore an independent state of Biafra in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria through an independence referendum.
