President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the former President of the Niger Republic, Mahamadou Issoufou for the successful completion of his second term as the country’s president.

Buhari, while congratulating Issoufou for his recent success in winning the 2020 Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, a prize that celebrates excellence in African leadership, also described the Republic of Niger as Nigeria’s sister country.

President Buhari made the remark on Wednesday while giving an account of the Tuesday visit of Issoufou to State House, Abuja in a statement.

Buhari said, “Yesterday I hosted President @IssoufouMhm at the State House. I congratulated him on the successful completion of his second term as President of our sister country, the Republic of Niger, and the good people of Niger for the successful conduct of a free, fair & credible election.

“I also congratulated him for winning the 2020 Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. President Issoufou is a worthy African leader who has earned the respect and affection of his people at home and his brethren across the border in Nigeria.”

Issoufou was first democratically elected as President of the Republic of Niger in 2011, after many years of military rule. He was elected for a second term in 2016. He stepped down at the end of his mandate, with a clear demonstration of respect for the constitution of the country.

Data from the 2020 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) outlined President Issoufou’s achievements.

Niger made progress in multiple areas during his reign, with great improvement in all four subcategories of human development. At the end of his tenure, the country was ranked 28 out of 54 countries in the IIAG.

The country is one of the ten most improved African countries in strengthening socio-economic opportunities for women.
