Coronavirus: Italy's Death Toll Surges To 10,000

Italy, the most-hit country by the novel coronavirus, has recorded over 10,000 deaths since the outbreak, amid the government's total lockdown.

Only a day after it recorded 969 deaths, standing as the highest single death toll recorded since the outbreak of the virus, Italy saw another 889 new fatal cases.

The country's government had scheduled April 3 as the deadline for the lifting of restrictions on movements across the country, but with the increasing deaths, the government is looking to push the date further.

According to the Service Chief, Civil Protection, Angelo, Borelli, he questioned, “Is it time to reopen the country? I think we have to think about it really carefully.

“The country is at a standstill and we must maintain the least amount of activity possible to ensure the survival of all.”

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, in an address said, “If one is being reasonable, one cannot envision a quick return to normal life.”

The economic impact of the virus' spread in Europe has caused some skirmish among country leaders over how best to respond to the outbreak.

Countries in the Southern part of Europe are asking that the European Union drops its strict budgetary rules.

Conte argues that the funds released by the Eu is nowhere near enough to battle the crisis. The EU has seen a release of more funds than it did during the '08/'09 financial crisis.

Countries like Spain, Italy, and France are asking that the EU begin the issuance of "corona bonds" aimed at raising funds to cater to the economic needs of European nations, by selling some off some common debts.
