Edo Decides 2020: Huge Ego Of Politicians Not Most Important, Says Ex-Nigeria Senate President

Edo Decides 2020: Huge Ego Of Politicians Not Most Important

Former President of the Senate of Nigeria, Bukola Saraki, reacting to the Edo State gubernatorial election 2020 says "Nigeria's glory is more important than the huge ego of politicians".

AllNews reports that Saraki via his verified Twitter handle on Sunday morning tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on impartiality while once again urging Edo electorates to protect their votes.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP's) Godwin Obaseki, the incumbent governor of the South-South state, and Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are the two major contenders for the number one seat in the state. Obaseki is currently leading Ize-Iyamu with over 80, 000 votes following completion of Saturday's election.

Obaseki is running for re-election on the platform of the PDP [Saraki's party] after being denied renomination by the APC arising from his falling out with Adams Oshiomhole who was the then-national chairman of the party. Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the APC also demarketed Obaseki recently. In a sponsored broadcast on TVC, the former Lagos governor urged Edo voters to reject Obaseki.

In the interval, INEC has the results of only two Local Government Areas (LGAs) left to announce. The mood generally on social networking services is that Obaseki's victory is imminent.

"The on-going Edo Decides 2020 is getting to the crucial stages. I urge the good people of Edo State not to get carried away but to protect their votes," Saraki said.

"The enthusiasm and patriotic conduct of the good people of Edo State must not be thwarted or subverted by any INEC official, either permanent or ad-hoc; or any security personnel, no matter the rank.

"Nigeria's glory is more important than the huge ego of politicians. And so INEC and security officials must work to protect Nigeria's image and not to satisfy the whims and caprices of some power-hungry politicians.

"I commend all those in Edo State who have stayed awake, protecting their votes, rejected money and refused to be intimidated.

"Only few hours left, urge you to not let your guard down until we get to the finish line and final results announced. God bless Edo State. God bless Nigeria."
