Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has ordered the immediate closure of all private and public schools in the state, AllNews reports.
The directive by the state government was contained in a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru on Wednesday morning.
The commissioner advised parents whose children are in boarding schools to pick them on Wednesday. However, he did not specifically reveal the reason behind the schools’ closure.
The statement reads in parts, “Parents whose children are in boarding schools are to also arrange and convey their children/ wards back home from tomorrow, Wednesday, 16th December 2020.” He further said, “All inconveniences are regretted.”
This online news platform understands that the announcement is coming three days to the end of the third term. Schools in Kano were expected to close on Friday, December 18.
Even though no reason was given for the closure of the schools, but the closure may not be unconnected to a spike in cases of COVID-19 in some parts of the country, which led to the closure of schools in some states including Kaduna and Jigawa.
The move may also not be unconnected to the recent abduction of over 300 schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.
