Islamic Cleric, Others Flog 14-Year-Old To Coma In Ilorin

Alfa Moshood, an Islamic cleric in Ilorin, Kwara State, has gone into hiding after he and 60 others allegedly flogged a 14-year-old boy to a coma on Thursday, April 8, 2021.

The victim is one of the students of the cleric, and reports say the teacher accused him of stealing his locally made safe, popularly referred to as 'Kolo'.

The unfortunate incident took place in the cleric's Qur'anic center at Ogidi, opposite Federal College in Ilorin. The 14-year-old whose name was not revealed was able to speak on what transpired after he regained consciousness and revealed that the cleric flogged him repeatedly with a Koboko before instructing about 60 persons around at the time to flog him 10 strokes each until he passed out.

According to the teenager, he was restrained by some individuals while he was being flogged. He said he was enrolled in the school by his mother about a year ago.

The cleric reportedly fled after the case was reported to the National Human Rights Commission, Kwara State branch.

The incident was confirmed by a representative of the commission, Barrister Ahmed Rufai, who spoke with Daily Trust. He stated that the victim is currently on admission in an undisclosed hospital in Ilorin West Local Government.

Efforts are being made to apprehend the Islamic cleric.
