La Liga: El Clasico; Barcelona vs Real Madrid, Match Preview

La Liga: El Clasico; Barcelona vs Real Madrid, Match Preview

Barcelona faces Real Madrid at Camp Nou in the first El Clasico of the La Liga 2020-21 season after both sides completed their Champions League fixtures.

AllNews understands that with recent form and losses in games, Barcelona is the favourite to win the El Clasico but also derbies like this is not always about form, it is about attitude, intensity, and hunger though, Real has not been showing those of late.

In the last 5 meetings between Barcelona and Real Madrid; Madrid (1W, 2L, 1D), Barcelona (2W, 2W, 1D).

Madrid currently sits at the 3rd position with 10 points on the La Liga table with a game at hand while Barcelona sits at the 9th with 7 points with 2 games at hand (due to a prolonged UEFA Champions League last season as a result of COVID-19 pandemic)

Real Madrid (El Clasico Build up)

Certain factors affect Real Madrid in their Champions League campaign already which include;

1. The loss against Shakhtar is the first time Real Madrid will start a UCL campaign.

2. Real Madrid has lost 8 UCL matches without Ramos (1 draw and 7 losses).

3. Shakhtar entered the game as a 15/1 underdog and ended up winning the game.

4. No team has ever lost its opening game in the UEFA Champions League and ended up winning the trophy.

Another crucial thing about the Real Madrid vs Shakhtar Donetsk game is that 13 players were missing from the squad due to COVID-19, yet they were 3-0 up in the first half against Real at Santiago Bernabeu.

Ramos' fitness is a doubt ahead of the game but he was seen training alone on Thursday at Valdebebas - performing individual drills with and without balls.

Unless the game against Barcelona is seen as a risk, Ramos is likely to feature in the match.

Injury Updates

Other injured players include; Mariano, Eden Hazard, Dani Carvajal, Martin Odegaard, and Alvaro Odriozola, who all trained ahead of the game.

Real Madrid has now suffered consecutive defeats at Cadiz, against Shakhtar Donetsk and a loss of the El Clasico might spell doom for Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

Benzema will always be a crucial figure for Real Madrid upfront with his experience and potency in front of goal.

Barcelona had more time to rest playing earlier on Tuesday at home while Real Madrid played on Wednesday also at home but will be less rested than Barca players.

Barcelona (El Clasico Build-up)

Barcelona entered this game been the favourite with the latest 5-1 win at Camp Nou against Ferencvarosi TC scoring the highest goal in the match so far by any team in the Champions League this season.

The interesting part of the goals is that Lionel Messi scored just one and assisted with one compared to previous seasons where Messi either scored all or 2 and assisted with the rest.

To Barcelona fans, it would be a relief that there has been a reduction in the over-reliance on Messi in games.

The UCL match also witnessed Barcelona with two 18-year-old players getting on the scoreboard -Pedri and Ansu Fati - indicating that the team is no longer predominantly occupied by aged players.

The last comfort to the fans is that Barcelona's substitution in the game was also spot on, adding depth to the game, especially with Ousmane Dembele's pace, setting up the fourth goal for Pedri and scoring the fifth himself.

Ronald Koeman now has a pool of players to pick from without doubting if there would be an impact or not.

Injury Update

Barcelona still has a chance without Jordi Alba, Ter Stegen, and Matteus Fernandes.

Neto has been playing quite well, and it would take a fully-fit Ter Stegen to bench him, while Alba would not be rushed back with Sergino Dest playing in that position.

Matteus Fernandes is almost not missed as he was just added to the first team.

Lionel Messi will continue to be an advantage to Barcelona anytime he is on the lineup or even from the bench as the 6-time Ballon d'Or winner has what it takes to single-handedly turn the match on its head.

He remains the 'King of El Clasico" with his goal feat.

No player has scored as many goals in the El Clasico game as Messi's 26. An impressive 18 of those have come in La Liga, again making him the all-time top scorer in league meetings between the two sides.
