Former Super Eagles Captain John Mikel Obi has opened up on his decision to join Chelsea instead of Manchester United when he was a teenager.
Mikel was a subject of interest from Chelsea and Manchester United in 2006, and he signed a contract with Manchester United before making a U-turn to join Chelsea.
The Blues then paid Manchester United $12 million to sign him, and Lyn Oslo got $4m.
The 35-year-old who announced his retirement from professional football last week has revealed what transpired in 2006.
“I don’t regret any decision I made because I enjoyed everything I achieved at Chelsea – it’s the best decision I have ever made in my life,” Mikel told BBC Sport Africa.
“I signed a pre-contract for Manchester United when I was 17.
"If you are a kid and you see Sir Alex Ferguson right in front of you with the contract, of course, you will be tempted.”
Mikel enjoyed a hugely successful time at Stamford Bridge, winning numerous trophies, including the Uefa Champions League, Premier League titles, Europa League, FA Cups, and League Cups.
At the International level, he led the Super Eagles to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and also participated in two World Cup competitions.
