UCL: Madrid Breaks Spanish Jinx With Win Over 10-Man Atalant

Real Madrid breaks Champions League jinx on La Liga teams as they close in on quarterfinals on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Atalanta in the first leg of their last 16 tie in Bergamo.

The 13-time winner of the competition were able to escape the Spanish team's streak as they are the only team from pain to win the first leg of the round of 16.

The game was looking to end in a draw as Los Blancos were misfiring with Vinicius Junior with some opportunity.

Ferland Mendy's strike four minutes from time gave Zinedine Zidane's side a lead heading into the second leg in Madrid on March 16 against an Atalanta side who played most of the match with 10 men following Remo Freuler's early red card.

Mendy scored his first UEFA Champions League goal for Real Madrid and his career on his 20th appearance in the competition.

Madrid will welcome Atalanta to Di Stefano Stadium with an edge as they now gave an away goal advantage over the champions league new-comers.
