The Twitter community has been buzzing since self-proclaimed African Giant, Burna Boy turned down activist, Omoyele Sowore's call for him to join anti-government protest on Nigeria's Independence day.
AllNews reports that Sowore and his group are embarking on a protest against President Muhammadu Buhari's administration on October 1st with series of hashtags trending on Twitter including #OccupyNigeria.
In a tweet on Tuesday, September 29, the activist reached out to Burna Boy who according to him, has been compared to late Fela Kuti.
Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow movement asked the "Ye" crooner to join in the protest.
"Hello @burnaboy, everywhere I turn people describe you as a revolutionary musician, the foreign media even celebrate you compare you to Fela Kuti, but I am yet to see you lead anyone to a police station carrying a coffin for head of state! Join #Oct1stProtest #RevolutionNow," he tweeted.

Responding, the singer said "Everybody is a Fela fan and supporter now that he is dead. Humans are so Funny, You politicians are ALL the same (especially in Nigeria) and Frankly, I don’t trust none of you.@YeleSowore."

Burna Boy's response did not sit well with Twitter users who said he claims that Fela's blood runs in his veins, but cannot join a protest.

I see that he's only carry fela for business gains.
Fela was a politician too like sowore and even contested for president .#Thread pic.twitter.com/prtaZjk1H1
Things I learnt from this Fela trend

1. Burna boy is not as brave as he claims...just weed inspired lyrics and Insha Allah
2. Sowore’s desperation is suspicious..it appears he’s more concerned about his very own agenda than making Nigeria better
Drops mic ??????
Burna Boy alluded to Nigerians being cowards in a song when it comes to standing up for themselves & I guess his refusal to take a stand when called out by Sowore hit a nerve. He claims to walk in the footsteps of Fela but it’s only in songs we hear this.pic.twitter.com/81bT1Ktp0k

Burna Boy doesn’t want DSS wahala. Man wants to drop hits, fly to London on private jet and give interviews about revolution, being an African giant & how we are cowards who can’t face govt.
— Dr. Dípò Awójídé (@OgbeniDipo) September 29, 2020
Sowore likes DSS wahala.
Sowore says Burna (Fela Jnr) come and join us. Burna says no?
Burna Boy"s statement that "everybody is a Fela fan & supporter now that Fela is dead" perfectly describes him. Burna Boy samples Fela music, uses Fela's lyrics & acts "low budget Fela" to make money & rise to fame, but the guy lacks the discipline & courage of Fela. What a shame

Burna boy made a video and called youths cowards. Ok, you that you're not a coward, come out and lead protest... You won't.
— Your Daddy (@ToyosiGodwin) September 30, 2020
Ogbeni, practice what you preach.
People might say Sowore is trying to make Burna Boy an instrument to actualize his agenda, but the point for me is that if you can talk the talk, you should be able to walk the talk. No be by calling people cowards in your song. I'm sure Fela won't be proud right now.
— Wale Adetona (@iSlimfit) September 30, 2020
It is apparent that you @burnaboy knew nothing about Fela. If you did, you would know that @felakuti was a radical politician like @YeleSowore . If truly you don't politicians, then you should dissociate yourself from Fela, because Fela once ran for president with a party- MASS https://t.co/jeByoAinH4

The point of Sowore and Burna boy’s exchange is:
— Man of Letters. (@Letter_to_Jack) September 30, 2020
African Giant who is so quick to call the youths many names is running away from a protest invitation, deflecting and shaming the person asking him to join them.
You knew this yet you called the youths names??
All of us including Burna Boy are not in the wrong for being skeptical, infact history shows that we must not sleep with two eyes close. The decision to protest is also very personal.
— Man of Letters. (@Letter_to_Jack) September 30, 2020
But he referred to us as cowards for our skepticism, now he’s a coward for his too.
Simple.
Burna Boy: Nigerian youths are cowards, scared to fight etc etc. (from his album)
— Man of Letters. (@Letter_to_Jack) September 30, 2020
Yele Sowore: Burna Boy, join us in a protest against the government.
Burna Boy: I don’t trust Nigerian politicians, they are all the same.
So you didn’t know this when you were calling us names?
