Despite the travel restrictions put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, Nigerians top the list of asylum seekers in Canada, beating out the Chinese and Indians.

This was revealed by data released by the Canadian Government, according to The Cable; the data showed that Nigerians outranked India and China on the list, and has topped the list for five years consecutively.

Over 12,600 Nigerian immigrants - economic class - received permanent residence status in Canada in 2019 through the skilled workers' immigration programme.

The need to migrate has been ascribed to a paucity in educational opportunities, versatile political climate, economic hardship, and the need to secure ease of life.

Canada recently announced its plans to open its doors to 1.2 million immigrants over a period of three years, blaming the emergence of COVID-19 on the reduction of migration into the country this year.

A statement by the Canadian Government read, “Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, every person who wants to enter Canada must appear for an examination at a port of entry in order for government officials to determine whether that person has a right to enter Canada, or if the individual may become authorized to enter and remain in Canada.”

With the United States' travel restrictions on Nigerians, Canada has become a more appealing option.
