With the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country, the South African Government has re-introduced a night curfew, suspending the sale of alcoholic beverages.
South Africa has, in recent days, seen a spike in the number of daily cases of infections, recording as high as 12,000 cases daily, overwhelming the health care system.
South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the African continent, with 276,242 coronavirus cases, and a total of 4,079 fatalities.
Addressing the nation, Ramaphosa, South Africa's president, said, “As we head towards the peak of infections, it is vital that we do not burden our clinics and hospitals with alcohol-related injuries that could have been avoided.

“We have therefore decided that in order to conserve hospital capacity, the sale, dispensing and distribution of alcohol will be suspended with immediate effect.”
He added that the sale of alcohol during this period has increased the strain on the healthcare system, "due to motor vehicle accidents, violence as well as trauma that is alcohol-induced."
He said that the curfew will run from 9 pm to 4 am, beginning on Monday.
