Microsoft has added a new setting to Edge profiles in the Canary version to inform the user that Edge will connect data from your profile with Windows.

A web browser saves browsing data such as sites you visited, bookmarks you saved, and recent tabs to your profile on your device. Microsoft Edge is going to make this data available to Windows features such as Search box and others for you to access when you enable the new Profiles setting in the Edge browser.

Microsoft Edge already has some settings that:

  • gather diagnostic data to improve Edge performance and stability
  • uses browsing history to show personalized ads
  • show search and site suggestions from your typed info in Omnibox

The setting “Share browsing data with other Windows features” found in Settings> Profiles> is pretty self-explanatory.

The setting reveals it allows to find open tabs, history, and favorites of Edge browser from Windows Search box as an example.

“When turned on, Microsoft Edge will connect local browsing data from this profile with the rest of Windows. Turning this feature on will help you find information from your history, favorites, top sites, and recent tabs more easily using features such as the Windows Search box”.

Here is how you can connect Microsoft Edge browsing data with Windows

  1. Launch Edge browser
  2. Visit Settings > Profiles
  3. Turn on “Share browsing data with other Windows features”

As of now, the feature isn’t working on Windows 10 as advertised in Setting. The setting is a placeholder now.
