Edo Decides 2020: Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu Pledge To Abide By Peace Pact

Edo Decides 2020: Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu Pledge To Abide By Peac

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Osagie Ize-Iyamu have pledged to abide by the peace pact they signed on Tuesday ahead of the governorship election.

The peace pact is coming in the heat of the increasing tension and forecast of violence ahead of the governorship polls which will take place on Saturday.

Organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC), the two main contenders of the governorship seat Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu vowed to diligently abide by the peace pact.

Speaking at the event, Obaseki asked NPC to engage some influential politicians who are interested in the election.

Obaseki held that the need to engage influential politicians in the state is necessary in order not to let the exercise end in futility.

“I want to commit publicly once again that I will live by the letter and spirit of the accord that has just been signed.

“Before leaving the stage, I want to appeal to the National Peace Committee not to end their work with the signing of this accord.

“There are other actors in the political space who will have and exercise influence in the political space and also elections to reach out to them to persuade them about the importance of this accord we have just signed,” Obaseki said.

Also promising to talk to his party leaders to charge their supporters to shun violence at the governorship polls, Ize-Iyamu promised that he and his supporters would conduct themselves peacefully.

“Let me reaffirm to our commitment to what has been signed and to reassure Nigerians that and particularly our people in Edo State that we will talk to all our supporters.

“We will conduct ourselves peacefully. We will do all our best to ensure that the election is peaceful,” Ize-Iyamu said.

The pact was signed by Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu and 12 other candidates.

It will be recalled that AllNews had, in August, reported that the Oba of Benin, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Iku Akpolokpolo, invited Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu for a peace meeting at his palace.

The meeting which took place at the Oba's palace in August had the leadership of the two opposing parties in attendance.
