The latest increase in the infection rate in India has resulted in the Prime Minister appealing to pilgrims and religious groups participating in the month-long Kumbh Mela festival to carry out the rituals symbolically as against gathering physically in the state of Uttarakhand.
India's Haridwar district (the location of the festival) has reported a total of 5,505 since the onset of the festival on April 1, 2021. In all, the country has had more than 14 million COVID-19 cases.
As of Sunday, India has announced 14,788,109 cases of the coronavirus, with 177,150 deaths, according to the Indian Ministry of Health.
