Sudan: First Batch Of Nigerian Students To Arrive Today

The first batch of Nigerian students evacuated from war-torn Sudan is expected to arrive in Nigeria today.

This is according to a tweet by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Thursday.

The students who were transported from Sudan in a bus were said to have arrived at the Aswan border in Egypt on Thursday.

However, the NiDCOM Chairperson noted that the border was already closed when the students arrived. 

She, therefore, stated that the evacuees would proceed to the airport on Friday morning.

Dabiri-Erewa, on her Twitter handle, wrote: "However, the first set has arrived the Aswan border in Egypt but the border is already closed.

"They will leave early morning and then proceed to the airport."

The NiDCOM Chairman had earlier tweeted that the stranded students had continued their journey after a video where the angry students expressed their grievances surfaced online. 

The Federal Government in a joint press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development had said: “Nigerian Mission in Egypt is liaising with the Egyptian authorities to facilitate the evacuation exercise, by providing emergency entry documents and holding shelters, until the stranded Nigerians are airlifted back to Nigeria.

“The Nigerian Air Force, Air Peace and other Airlines have received clearance to fly to Egypt. The NAF C-130H is scheduled to leave Abuja tomorrow, 28th April, 2023 to commence the airlifting of the evacuees.”
