Five Nigerian Celebrities Born In May

Birthday is the anniversary of the birth of a person, another year older, and another reason to celebrate. It is the time to celebrate birth itself and an occasion to reflect on our beginning and how far we have come.

A whole lot of celebrities are having their birthdays this month – May. But well, let’s pick Kizz Daniel, Chidinma Ekile, Genevieve Nnaji, Iretiola Doyle, and Damilola Adegbite and know more about them.

Kizz Daniel - May 1

His birth name is Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe but he is popularly known by his stage name ‘Kizz Daniel’. According to him, his stage name was given to him by a girl who wouldn’t stop calling him ‘Kiss’. He officially changed his stage name from ‘Kiss Daniel’ to ‘Kizz Daniel’ in May 2018 after leaving G-Worldwide Entertainment, the record label he was signed to.

Kizz Daniel was born on May 1, 1994, in his hometown, Abeokuta, Ogun state. He attended Abeokuta Grammar School for his secondary education before moving on to the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta where he studied Water Resources Management and Agro-meteorology (Water Engineering). He faced music fully when he graduated in 2013.

Kizz Daniel released his debut single ‘Shoye’ in May 2014 under G-Worldwide Entertainment. In September 2014, he released his second single ‘Woju’ which was produced by DJ Coublon. Woju became an instant hit and brought him to the limelight. The song became one of the biggest tracks of the year in Nigerian and even got nominated for ‘Hottest Single of the Year’ at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Later on, he recorded and released a remix version with Davido and Tiwa Savage.

Chidinma Ekile - May 2

Chidinma Ekile was born on May 2, 1991, in Ketu, Lagos State as the sixth of seven children. Her family originally hails from Imo state, a southeastern state in Nigeria.

She started singing at the age of 6 and joined her church choir when she was 10. Chidinma had her primary and secondary education at Ketu before her parents relocated to Ikorodu. Prior to auditioning for Project Fame West Africa, she was a business promoter.

Chidinma wanted to study mass communication but ended up attaining a sociology degree from the University of Lagos. Chidinma initially declined her admission to the University of Lagos due to her advancement in Project Fame West Africa.

While the MTN Project Fame West Africa show lasted, she and 17 other contestants had 10 weeks of training from musical professionals ranging from voice coaches, and inspirational speakers to established musicians, and music business service providers.

She was pronounced the winner on September 26 2010. She won a number of prizes, including ₦2.5 million, a 2011 Toyota RAV4, and a production deal. In May 2013, Chidinma signed an endorsement deal with MTN Nigeria.

As an actress, she debuted in Kunle Afolayan’s ‘The Bridge’ in 2017.

Genevieve Nnaji - May 3

Genevieve Nnaji was born on May 3, 1979, in Imo state but was raised in Lagos. She hails from Umuebi Amuzu in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. Genevieve attended Methodist Girls College, Yaba for her secondary education and then proceeded to the University of Lagos where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts.

While at the university, she started auditioning for acting jobs in Nollywood. She started her acting career as a child actor when she acted in a popular television soap opera ‘Ripples’ when she was 8. She came fully into the Nigeria Movie Industry in 1998 when she acted in the movie ‘Most Wanted’ at age 19.

Since then she has starred in lots of movies and has gotten various awards for her contribution to the Nigerian Movie Industry.

In 2004, Genevieve signed a recording contract with a Ghanaian record label, EKB Records, where she released her debut album ‘One Logologo Line’.

Apart from being an actress, she is also a model. She has modeled for many commercial brands and has had plenty of sponsorship deals with many big brands. She was made the face of LUX in 2014 and also the face of MUD cosmetics in 2010. Other brands include Amstel Malta, Polo – a fashion brand, Range Rover cars, Etisalat, etc.

In 2014, Genevieve launched her fashion brand ‘St. Genevieve’. The clothing line was later re-launched in collaboration with Jumia, a Nigerian online retail store in 2016.

Iretiola Doyle - May 3

Ireti’s career in the entertainment industry began in 1995 when she auditioned for a role in the TV series ‘Riddles and Hopes’ during one of her school strikes. She was motivated to become an actress while she was in secondary school while watching Joke Silva in a TV series ‘Mind Bending’.

Along the line, she began hosting television shows like Morning Ride on STV, Nimasa This Week on Channels TV, and so on. Ireti also produced ‘Oge with Iretiola’ her own lifestyle and fashion show which ran consecutively for ten years.

Apart from being an actress, she is a creative writer with several screenplays to her credit, Amaka Igwe’s Tempest (Season 1) included.

She is also an enthusiastic social commentator who has penned different columns for This Day Newspaper, Saturday Vanguard, and City People. Ever since she began her career in the entertainment industry, she has perfected her skills and is often referred to as ‘Actor’s Actor’ by her fans.

Damilola Adegbite - May 18

She was born on May 18, 1985, in Surulere, Lagos. For her secondary education, she went to Queen’s College, Yaba. After her secondary education, she proceeded to Bowen University, Osun state to get a degree in Business Administration.

Damilola’s career started in 2008 when she went for a movie audition and was given the role of ‘Thelma Duke’ in Tinsel – Mnet’s first multi-camera production. She also played the role of ‘Kemi Williams’ in the movie ‘Flower Girl’.

From 2008-2010, she worked as a red carpet host and program anchor for Sound City TV. She has also worked with several brands such as Nestle.

Some of the movies she has starred in include; 6 Hours to Christmas, Flower Girl, The Missing, Banana Island Ghost, Isoken, From Lagos with Love, Merrymen: The Real Yoruba Demons, Heaven’s Hell and Coming from Insanity.
